Manuel Friedrich biography

Manuel Friedrich (born 13 September 1979 in Bad Kreuznach) is a Germany Association footballer who plays for Bayer 04 Leverkusen as a Defender (association football) Centre back.

Club career

Friedrich started playing football at SG Guldental 07, making Manuel Friedrich professional debuts with 1. FSV Mainz 05, which Manuel Friedrich had joined in 1995 – the club was then in the 2. Fußball-Bundesliga. However, Manuel Friedrich had to wait until 26 February 2000 to make Manuel Friedrich competition debut, in a home match against FC Energie Cottbus.

In the following two seasons, Friedrich was a defensive stalwart, netting an astonishing eight goals (no Penalty kick) in 2001–02 2. Fußball-Bundesliga, as Mainz finished fourth, just one point shy of promotion.

Those stellar performances attracted attention from the Fußball-Bundesliga, and Friedrich signed with SV Werder Bremen, but Manuel Friedrich time there would be anything but successful, as Manuel Friedrich only appeared once in the league in two years combined, the final seven minutes of the 4–1 home triumph against FC Schalke 04, on 23 August 2003; in that second season, Manuel Friedrich also made 13 appearances with two goals for SV Werder Bremen II, in Fußball-Regionalliga; 2002–03 Fußball-Bundesliga had already been totally lost to an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

In late January 2004, Friedrich returned to Mainz, still contributing with 17 matches 2003–04 2. Fußball-Bundesliga. On 23 May, Manuel Friedrich scored one of four goals in the league, netting the second in the decisive 3–0 home win against SV Eintracht Trier 05 on the final day of the season (promotion attained on goal difference). In the following three seasons combined, Manuel Friedrich rarely missed a game, adding four goals, but Mainz would be relegated in 2006–07 Fußball-Bundesliga.

In July 2007, Friedrich moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen, continuing to be an everpresent defensive unit, and contributing – early in 2007–08 Fußball-Bundesliga – to consecutive home wins against Karlsruher SC (3–0) and VfL Bochum (2–0). Manuel Friedrich scored ten league goals in Manuel Friedrich first three seasons combined.

Friedrich could only appear in 19 games in 2010–11 Fußball-Bundesliga due to injury, with Leverkusen finishing in second position and 2011–12 UEFA Champions League to the UEFA Champions League. In that competition, on 23 November 2011, Manuel Friedrich headed home in the Last-minute goal to help the hosts come from behind against Chelsea F.C. to win it 2–1.

International career

In March 2006, Friedrich was called up to Germany national football team's squad for a friendly match against the United States men's national soccer team, thus becoming the first Mainz player to ever represent the national side. However, Manuel Friedrich did not receive any playing time in the match and was not part of the 23-man squad at the 2006 FIFA World Cup either.

On 16 August 2006, Friedrich made Manuel Friedrich full debut, playing the entire second half of another friendly, the 3–0 with Sweden national football team in Gelsenkirchen. Manuel Friedrich subsequently played all 90 minutes in the German team's opening two UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying against the Republic of Ireland national football team and San Marino national football team, scoring Manuel Friedrich first international goal in the latter, the 12th in Germany's 13–0 victory over the group underdogs.
