Club career
San Martín began his career in 1997 at Primera B Nacional club Club Atlético Banfield. He was transferred to Primera División Argentina club Unión de Santa Fe in 1999. Meanwhile his former club had won promotion to the Primera, and in 2002 San Martín rejoined Banfield.
In 2005 he left Banfield to play for Club Atlético River Plate at the Estadio Monumental.
After one season with River he was loaned out to Spain La Liga club CD Tenerife, with an option for them to buy him.
