Club career
AFC Ajax
Maxwell started Maxwell Scherer career at Cruzeiro Esporte Clube. In June 2001, Maxwell Scherer signed a 3+2 year contract with AFC Ajax. Maxwell played Maxwell Scherer best season for Ajax in 2003-04 season, only missed 3 games for the Eredivisie winner due to international duty, and became the Dutch footballer of the year.
Maxwell Scherer was seriously injured in April 2005 and never played again for Ajax.
Internazionale
Maxwell Scherer contract with Ajax was shortened to expire on the 2 January 2006,. in order to join F.C. Internazionale Milano on a free transfer Due to non-Citizenship of the European Union player registration quota per year, Maxwell Scherer was signed by Empoli F.C. until the end of season before officially transferred to Inter in a similar deal to that of Júlio César Soares Espíndola to A.C. ChievoVerona; however, Maxwell Scherer did not play any games.
In July 2006, Inter officially announced the signing of Maxwell on a four-year contract as a domestic transfer.
Maxwell impressed in Maxwell Scherer first season in Serie A, most notably against Parma F.C. at the San Siro when Maxwell Scherer scored a fine solo effort which was voted Inter's goal of the season by Inter channel viewers.
Initially placed at left back, the Serie A 2007-08 saw Maxwell Scherer move further up the field with Cristian Chivu replacing Maxwell Scherer at left back while Maxwell played a left midfield/winger role. This became very effective as Maxwell adapted well to the winger role which made use of Maxwell Scherer blistering pace. In that season, Maxwell Scherer won Maxwell Scherer second consecutive Scudetto with Inter. In the Serie A 2008-09, Maxwell Scherer suffered a serious injury that took Maxwell Scherer out of competition for six weeks. But the following games in which Maxwell Scherer returned to action, Maxwell Scherer always inserted into the starting XI and showed Maxwell Scherer impressive old form before the injury. Maxwell Scherer scored Maxwell Scherer second goal for Inter on 14 December against A.C. Chievo Verona, which they won 4-2 after a beautiful assist from Dejan Stanković.
FC Barcelona
On July 15th 2009, it was announced that Barcelona and Internazionale had reached an agreement, with Maxwell joining the Catalan club for €4.5m and €0.5m in variables. Two days later Maxwell signed Maxwell Scherer 4+1 year contract and was presented as a new Barça player.
International career
Along with former teammate Maicon Douglas Sisenando, Maxwell Scherer capped for 2004 CONMEBOL Men Pre-Olympic Tournament. In October 2004 Maxwell Scherer was first call-up to senior team, but did not play. Maxwell was called up to the Brazil national football team squad in June 2008 against Argentina national football team but not the following games due to Maxwell Scherer injury. Maxwell Scherer currently waits to make Maxwell Scherer debut for Maxwell Scherer Brazil side.
