Nowland started his career at Blackpool F.C. where he made his professional debut at the age of 17.
Despite making 80 appearances for Blackpool F.C. he was released by manager Steve McMahon in 2001.
He signed for Wimbledon F.C. but only made 34 league starts in 3 years, he then played for West Ham United F.C. and Nottingham Forest F.C. and Gillingham F.C. on loan before joining Preston North End F.C. on a free transfer in 2005.
He made a good start for Preston North End F.C., scoring 3 goals in 9 starts, but then suffered a broken leg playing against Norwich City F.C. after a bad challenge by Dickson Etuhu - a player still on loan from Preston at the time of the incident.
It was announced on 20 September 2007 that he had once again joined Gillingham F.C. on loan. After returning to Preston in November he was quickly loaned out again, this time to Stockport County F.C. until 1 January. In January 2008 he was released by Preston and was without a club until he signed for Notts County in June.
