Aged just seventeen, he left Parmiter's School to pursue a full-time career at Watford. His debut came in a 2006 Football League Cup second round tie against Accrington Stanley F.C., in which he scored a penalty in the shootout, won 6–5 by Watford.

Aged just seventeen, he left Parmiter's School to pursue a full-time career at Watford. His debut came in a 2006 Football League Cup second round tie against Accrington Stanley F.C., in which he scored a penalty in the shootout, won 6–5 by Watford.
He signed his first professional contract with Watford on the 1 February 2007. In March 2007, Parkes was called up to represent his country at Under-18 level.
In the 2007-08 in English football season he was loaned to Football League Two sides Brentford F.C. and Barnet F.C.. He made his league debut for Watford on 30 August 2008 against Ipswich Town F.C., replacing the injured Mat Sadler. He was replaced at half time by John-Joe O'Toole.
