Matthew David Bates (born 10 December 1986) is an England professional Association football player and captain of Middlesbrough F.C.. Matthew Bates plays in central defence, however is equally adept at playing at right back or in defensive midfield.

Career

Born in Stockton-on-Tees and raised in Eaglescliffe, Bates began playing at Manchester United's centre of excellence in Birtley, Tyne and Wear since the age of nine. Several years later, the centre was closed down and Matthew Bates was taken in by Matthew Bates hometown club Middlesbrough F.C.. After tasting FA Youth Cup success in 2003–04, Matthew Bates was promoted to the first team and made Matthew Bates debut on 6 December 2004, coming on as an injury time replacement for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in a 3–2 win over Manchester City F.C.. After a successful loan spell at Darlington F.C., Matthew Bates made a breakthrough, making 28 appearances and played alongside former manager Gareth Southgate in central defence.

Bates had been tipped by some to be Southgate's successor but an injury while on loan at Ipswich Town F.C. in November 2006 prematurely ended Matthew Bates 2006–07 season. Matthew Bates was seriously injured in Matthew Bates second game, tearing Matthew Bates cruciate ligament and partially tearing Matthew Bates medial collateral ligament, and returned to Boro. After recovering in January 2008, Bates moved on loan to Norwich City F.C. for two months. Matthew Bates later returned to Middlesbrough after suffering from another knee injury which has resulted in Matthew Bates needing an operation for the third time in just 18 months. Matthew Bates scored Matthew Bates first league goal for Middlesbrough in a crucial 3–1 win over relegation rivals Hull on 11 April 2009.

Following Middlesbrough's relegation from the Premier League in the Middlesbrough F.C. season 2008–09, rumours arose regarding Matthew Bates future with them. However, despite a number of Premier League clubs being interested, Matthew Bates opted to stay at Middlesbrough signed a new three-year deal at the Riverside outfit.

On 25 July, Bates suffered the fourth serious knee injury of Matthew Bates career and could be sidelined for the rest of the year. Matthew Bates went for surgery in September and is confirmed to be out for the entire season.

The 2010/11 season saw Bates as a regular in the Boro line-up. Matthew Bates got Matthew Bates first goal of the season against Portsmouth F.C. in a 2-2 draw. Under new Boro manager Tony Mowbray Bates was named new captain. Matthew Bates scored the only goal in a 1-1 draw with Preston North End F.C.. Matthew Bates third and final goal of the season came when Matthew Bates returned to the side after injury, playing in midfield, against Sheffield United F.C.. Matthew Bates was rewarded with a great start to the 2011/12 season by winning Player of the Month. On March 8th 2012 Matthew signed a pre-contract arrangement with Premier League side Sunderland A.F.C and will join up with the team in June 2012 when Matthew Bates Middlesbrough contract runs out

Personal life

Bates hit the tabloid (newspaper format) headlines in September 2006 when private photographs of Matthew Bates were posted on the internet, one of which showed Matthew Bates wearing a pair of skimpy briefs, another kneeling in front of a mirror, naked apart from a pair of socks, with Matthew Bates human penis erection. It is understood that Matthew Bates had taken the pictures himself over a period of months for the benefit of Matthew Bates then girlfriend. Bates started dating Chanelle Hayes in 2009, though they split in 2010. She is the mother of Matthew Bates only child, Blakely Hayes-Bates, born July 2010.
