Josemi started his career at Málaga CF, before becoming Rafael Benítez's first signing as Liverpool F.C. manager for £2 million in the summer of 2004. He played in 14 first-team games in all competitions for Liverpool in the 2005-06 in English football season.
Despite an intial run in the first-team, he was red carded in Liverpool's 4-2 victory over Fulham. His subsequent ban led to Steve Finnan re-establishing himself as Benitez's first choice right back.
