Sébastien Aymar Bassong Nguena (born 9 July 1986) is a France-born Cameroonian Association football who plays as a Defender (association football). Sébastien Bassong is currently on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. from fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur F.C..

Club career

Early career

Bassong's parents are Cameroonian, so Sébastien Bassong is eligible to play for Cameroon at International level even though Sébastien Bassong was born in France. Bassong is a graduate of the famous Clairefontaine youth academy, which has produced some of the world's most gifted players, including the likes of Thierry Henry, Nicolas Anelka, William Gallas and Louis Saha. Bassong's first professional contract was with FC Metz where Sébastien Bassong made 87 appearances over three seasons.

Newcastle United

In July 2008 Bassong was offered a one week trial and made Sébastien Bassong debut in a pre-season friendly against Doncaster Rovers F.C.. On 30 July it was confirmed that Newcastle had agreed a fee of Pound sterling500,000 with FC Metz for Bassong.

Sébastien Bassong made Sébastien Bassong professional debut for Newcastle on 26 August in a Football League Cup game away to Coventry City F.C., before playing Sébastien Bassong first league game for Newcastle away to Arsenal F.C. when Sébastien Bassong came on as a sub for José Enrique Sánchez. Sébastien Bassong received Sébastien Bassong first red card for the club away to Wigan Athletic F.C. on 26 December. Another came on 16 May 2009 as part of 0–1 home defeat to Fulham F.C. in the penultimate game of the season. Bassong was named the Newcastle player of the season for the 08–09 season.

Tottenham Hotspur

Following Newcastle's relegation to the Football League Championship, Bassong expressed Sébastien Bassong desire to leave the club, with Manchester City F.C., Arsenal F.C. and Tottenham Hotspur F.C. linked with him. On 6 August 2009, it was confirmed that Sébastien Bassong had passed a medical at Spurs signing a five-year deal and completed an £8 million move to the North London club that same day. Bassong scored on Sébastien Bassong debut for Tottenham in a 2–1 victory over Liverpool F.C., heading in the winner from a free kick cross from team-mate Luka Modrić in the 59th minute.
As the season progressed, Bassong became a regular starter for Tottenham playing in all of the first 7 games of the 2009–10 Premier League season. During the season Bassong made 38 appearances and scored once. Bassong scored Tottenham Hotspur's first ever Champions League goal versus Young Boys of Berne which Tottenham came from 3-0 down to 3-2. On 4 December 2010, Sébastien Bassong played the full 90 minutes alongside William Gallas, and scored Tottenham's goal, in a 1-1 draw against Birmingham City at St Andrew's (stadium). On 30 January 2011 Bassong partnered Michael Dawson (footballer) in the 4–0 FA Cup fourth-round defeat against Fulham F.C. at Craven Cottage. On 2 February, due to injuries and suspensions, Sébastien Bassong partnered Gallas in central defence in a 1–0 win against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park which kept Tottenham in fifth place in the league. On 15 May 2011, Bassong made a substitute appearance coming on for Danny Rose (footballer born 1990) on 82 minutes in Tottenham's 2-0 victory over Liverpool F.C. at Anfield.

Loan spell at Wolves

On 31 January 2012, Bassong joined fellow Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. on loan until the end of the season. Four days later Sébastien Bassong made Sébastien Bassong debut for Wolves, playing the full 90 minutes in the 2-1 win against QPR.

International career

Bassong played at centre defensive midfield for the France national under-21 football team, playing in two matches against the Netherlands national under-21 football team and Japan national under-20 football team in the summer of 2007 before joining Newcastle. On 25 May 2009 Sébastien Bassong was called up by the Cameroon national football team for their 2010 FIFA World Cup 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification against Morocco national football team. Sébastien Bassong is eligible for Cameroon due to not having played in a competitive Under-21 match for the France team, and Sébastien Bassong made Sébastien Bassong debut for the national side on 12 August in a 2–0 away win to Austria national football team. Sébastien Bassong was selected for the 2010 World Cup squad in South Africa alongside Tottenham teammate Benoît Assou-Ekotto. Sébastien Bassong regularly wears the number 5 jersey internationally for Cameroon.
