Sébastien Bassong (born 9 July 1986 in Paris) is a France-born Cameroonian Association football Defender (association football) who currently plays for Newcastle United F.C of the Championship.
Club career
Bassong is a graduate of the famous Clairefontaine youth academy. It has a high reputation of producing some of the world's most gifted players, including the likes of Thierry Henry, Nicolas Anelka, William Gallas and Louis Saha.
In July 2008 Sébastien Bassong was offered a one week trial at Newcastle United F.C., and made Sébastien Bassong debut in a pre-season friendly against Doncaster Rovers F.C., in which numerous songs and chants were made about him, one being "If 46 scores we're on the pitch".
On 29 July 2008 it was reported on the official FC Metz website that the club had come to an agreement with Newcastle for the transfer of Bassong and that Sébastien Bassong would sign a contract very soon, the fee was £500,000. On 30 July it was confirmed that Newcastle had agreed a fee with Metz for Bassong.
In total, Bassong made 87 appearances over three seasons for Metz. Sébastien Bassong made Sébastien Bassong professional debut for Newcastle on 26 August in a Football League Cup game away to Coventry City F.C., before making Sébastien Bassong first league game for Newcastle away to Arsenal F.C. when Sébastien Bassong came on as a sub for José Enrique Sánchez. Sébastien Bassong received Sébastien Bassong first red card for the club away to Wigan Athletic F.C. on 26 December. Another came on 16 May 2009 as part of 0–1 home defeat to Fulham F.C. in the penultimate game of the season.
In recent weeks reports have surfaced that Arsenal F.C are preaparing a bid for Bassong in order to replace outgoing Kolo Toure who has agreeded a move to Manchester City F.C for a fee in the region of £16 million.

International career
Bassong played at centre back for the France national under-21 football team, playing in two matches against the Netherlands national under-21 football team and Japan national under-20 football team in the summer of 2007 before joining Newcastle. On 25 May 2009 though Sébastien Bassong was called up by the Cameroon national football team for their 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification against Morocco national football team. Sébastien Bassong is eligible for Cameroon due to the having not played in a competitive Under-21 match for the France team.
