Career
Newton began his career as a youth player with West Ham United F.C., where he was a member of their FA_Youth_Cup_Final_squads 1998.2F99:_West_Ham_United_v._Coventry_.283-0.2C_6-0.29 in 1999, scoring in the second leg of the final in an aggregate 9–0 win over Coventry City F.C.. He turned professional in August 1998, but struggled to establish himself. He was loaned to Portsmouth F.C. in July 1999 and made his league debut the following month in Portsmouth's 2–1 Championship win at home to Sheffield United F.C.. He returned to West Ham at the end of August and on 25 September 1999 made his Premiership debut for West Ham, when he appeared as a second-half substitute for Marc Keller in West Ham's 1–0 defeat away to Coventry City F.C.. Later that season he appeared as a substitute in West Ham's 3–1 win away to NK Osijek in the UEFA Cup and in April 2000 was a late substitute for Scott Minto in West Ham's 5–0 win at home to Coventry. These were to be his only first team games for the Hammers. Newton joined Notts County F.C. on loan in November 2000 until the end of the season and in March 2002 joined Leyton Orient F.C. on loan until the end of the season. He was released by West Ham at the end of the 2001–02 season and, after rejecting a contract with Orient,
He joined Peterborough United F.C. in May 2002.He quickly established himself in the Peterborough side, and in 2004 was one of three UK-based players, the others being Sagi Burton and Calum Willock to be called up by Saint Kitts and Nevis national football team for the 2004 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. After dropping down the pecking order following the arrival of Russell Martin (footballer) at the end of the 2007–08 season, Newton's contract with Peterborough was cancelled by mutual agreement and he joined Football League Two side Brentford F.C. on a one-year contract from 1 July 2008. At the start of the 2008/09 season, the Brentford manager, Andy Scott (footballer) named him as the club's captain.
