Nelson started his career at Cheltenham youth club Battledown FC, where he was managed by Rob Tyler and played in the side that featured the likes of Liam Tyler, Stuart Lewis (ex-Aston Villa) and Nick Williams (ex-Watford).
County Cup success led to Nelson being spotted by Hucknall. Nelson joined Brentford F.C. from Northern Premier League side Hucknall Town F.C. in February 2004 for a fee of £10,000. The former Cirencester Town F.C. goalkeeper completed his first full season with the Bees in 2004-05 in English football, maintaining 21 clean sheets and helping the team into the promotion play-offs.
Nelson was appointed club captain for the 2006-07 in English football season. However, a ligament injury picked up in October meant that he was unable to play again until 2007. He returned and played 6 games towards the end of the season.
He was released by Brentford on May 16, 2007. He signed for Leyton Orient F.C. in summer 2007. He left Leyton Orient F.C. on May 9th 2008 by mutual consent due to relocating issues. On August the 1st Norwich City confirmed the signing of Nelson after he impressed Glenn Roeder while on trial at Carrow Road.
