Yamada surprised the Australian football community by arriving unannounced to trial with Adelaide United in mid-December 2006,
the J-League season having finished on 2 December2006. Adelaide United has a guaranteed spot in Group G of the AFC Champions League 2007 and needs a high-profile Asian player as a temporary replacement for injured former Chinese national striker, Shengqing Qu.. Media reports in January 2007 suggested that attacking midfield Brazilian Miami FC player, Diego Walsh had been preferred, signing for the Adelaide United for 2-and-a-half years.
