Gastón Fernández biography
Gaston Nicolas Fernandez (born October 12 1983 in Lanús) is an Argentine association football player who currently plays for Estudiantes de La Plata on loan from UANL Tigres in Mexico.
"La Gata" ("The Cat"), as Gaston is nicknamed, began his professional career in Club Atlético River Plate. After a stint with Racing Club and another season back with River, in 2006 he was loaned to Club de Futbol Monterrey for a large sum. When the contract was finished, Monterrey declined to pay the nearly two million dollars to permanently buy Gastón, thus prompting Gastón to return to River Plate in December 2006.
However, just like in CF Monterrey, Gaston's services weren't needed in River Plate. Passarella, then River's head coach, believed the team had enough strikers. Gaston was then sold to San Lorenzo de Almagro. In San Lorenzo "La Gata" revindictated his career. He was the leading scorer of the team that won the Clausura 2007 championship. By the end of his first tournament with San Lorenzo in May 2007, he had plans to return to Monterrey, but San Lorenzo didn't let him go.
He has played for several Argentina national football team's youth teams, and is regarded as one of the more promising Argentine forwards. He scored his first goal with UANL Tigres in a game against San Luis.
