David Clarkson (born 10 September 1985 in Bellshill, Scotland) is a professional football (soccer) currently playing for Scottish Premier League club Motherwell F.C..
Clarkson made his debut for Motherwell a few days after the club entered administration, as a substitute for Dirk Lehmann during an away SPL match against Kilmarnock FC on 27 April 2002
His uncle, Phil O'Donnell (footballer), was club captain until his death on 29 December 2007 from heart failure during a match against Dundee United. Clarkson was later voted player of the year due to his fantastic performances before and after the death of his uncle and the way in which he conducted himself in light of the tragedy. Clarkson will wear O'Donnell's old squad number, 10, in the 2008/09 season. His cousin Brian Dempsie previously played for Motherwell and another cousin Stephen_O%27Donnell_%28footballer_born_1983%29 currently plays for St Mirren FC.
Clarkson was called up by George Burley for Scotland national football team's friendly match against the Czech Republic national football team on 30 May 2008. He told the official Motherwell F.C website that his late uncle Phil O'Donnell (footballer) would have been proud of him. He came on as a substitute in the match, and scored Scotland's only goal in the 85th minute when he took down a cross, spun superbly and fired past Czech keeper Petr Cech.
