Club Deportivo Numancia de Soria, S.A.D. is a Spain sports club from Soria. Numancia is named after the ancient Celtiberians town of Numantia, near present-day Soria. Founded on 9 April 1945, Numancia competes in Spanish football's
La Liga, after having been promoted from the
Segunda División at the end of the 2007-08 season.
Numancia plays in red shirts and blue shorts, and holds home games at the
Nuevo Estadio Los Pajaritos, that seats 9,800 spectators. Besides football (soccer) it has other departments in sports, such as volleyball, women's team handball, and rhythmic gymnastics.
History
Having spent a long time in the
Tercera División, Numancia made consistent progress, reaching the La Liga on three occasions: 1999, 2004 and 2008.
Numancia became first widely known in Spain in 1995-96, while still playing at the Segunda División B, for its extraordinary run at the Copa del Rey, eliminating three top flight clubs (Real Sociedad, Racing de Santander and Sporting de Gijón), only being knocked out in the quarter-finals by FC Barcelona, after taking the lead.
Following a 1-3 loss at Sporting Gijón, on 2 November 2008, Numancia reached a total of 200 goals against in the first division, reaching 43rd in the All-Time La Liga table list.
