India - All India Football Federation
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is the amateur organisation which administers the game of association football in India. The organisation also administers the National Football League which is India's premier domestic club competition.
The AIFF was founded in 1937 and after India's independence sought affiliation to the world governing body FIFA; the AIFF joined this in 1948.
History
Before the AIFF was founded there was no national organisation responsible for promoting football in the country, and there were few provincial football associations. The Indian Football Association (IFA), the association governing football in the state of West Bengal, was recognised as the de-facto governing body. The IFA at this time was mainly run by Englishmen, and was affiliated to the Football Association of England; this meant all foreign tours were negotiated with, and run by, the IFA.
The IFA thought that this state of affairs should be changed, and in 1935 invited representatives of other Indian football associations to a meeting in Darbhanga. The attending associations included the IFA, Assam, Bihar, UP, Delhi, Mysore and Bombay. The meeting was chaired by the then president of the IFA, the Maharaja of Santosh.
